The friendly air and land transportation company for home and overseas visitors alike
Set out on internationalism, one large complex of friendly transportation
Taipei City has always been known as a "friendly tourist destination". The friendly and convenient transportation and services in Taipei can be experienced at the very frontlines of our country's gateways, Songshan Airport, Taipei Main Station, where three rail systems converge, and in taxies with bilingual or multilingual services provided for foreign tourists.Songshan Airport has been the hub of domestic civil air transport for a long time. As of 2008, the governments lifted the ban on direct cross-strait flights. Moreover, in 2010 the airport returned to operating in the market for international air transport. It emphasizes that Taipei and the important commercial cities in Northeast Asia are forming a one-day living area. Taipei Main Station is not only the railway station with the largest traffic volume in Taiwan, it is also a significant transport hub in Greater Taipei. With the completion of the underground railway project, and the opening of MRT and Taiwan High Speed Rail, it has become the benchmark of rail transport with its "three-rail-convergence".
As Taipei becomes more and more internationalized, taxi drivers with bilingual certification are increasing. As such, foreign visitors can enjoy traveling around Taipei more due to easier communication. Scenes of "Driving Miss Daisy" can be seen everywhere.
The annual handling capacity of Songshan Airport is approximately 3,800,000 passengers from international flights, and 2,800,000 passengers from domestic flights. 97.78% of the passengers stated that they were satisfied with the overall service of this airport. This location has thus become the frontline where foreign and domestic tourists experience the internationalization and friendly tourist service of Taipei.
The average number of passengers going in and out of Taipei Main Station is 82,000. If the 40,000 passengers deriving from the Taiwan High Speed Train were added, there would be approximately 120,000 passengers passing through this "underground labyrinth" every day, as if interpreting the scenes Jimi fancies in his illustrated book "MRT".

Living Area of MRT
Wandering around the city, the moving castle for self-guided tour in Taipei
Since the opening of Taipei's MRT, citizens of Taipei and international and domestic passengers have all become used to taking the MRT as an important means of transportation to commute or conduct micro trips in the city. Let's re-experience the culture of MRT in this display area!

Since the opening of Taipei MRT Muzha line in 1996, Taipei City formally entered "MRT era", which laid down the marker for high quality transportation culture that is safe, convenient, clean, comfortable, bright, and punctual. It also became the best mobile fortress aiding the residents of Greater Taipei and self-guided tourists to wander around in the city.
After the opening of the Taipei MRT Songshan Line by the end of 2014, the early road network of Taipei MRT was completed. It was to become one of the most representative city cards in Taipei.
There are altogether 11 operating lines in the Taipei MRT system in May, 2014, and the operating length is 123.3 km. The accumulated handling capacity surpasses 6.4 billion passengers. The average daily handling capacity was up to 1.85million passengers in January, 2014. The total travel time saved was 25.54 billion minutes. The total amount of carbon dioxide emission reduced was 189,900 tons, which was equivalent to the carbon dioxide absorptive amount of 488 Da'an Forest Parks in one year.
The reliability of Taipei MRT is also well known internationally. It was ranked top first by CoMET and Nova, the world's metro benchmarking groups, among all other member systems in this organization. In addition, it has remained at the top of the rankings for 5 consecutive years since 2008. Moreover, its system reliability reached 3.084 million MKBF in 2012, achieving the best performance over the years.

The future of Taipei's transportation
Eco-friendly wisdom, creating a vision of sustainable transportation and carless ease

Taipei City's future transportation goals: it is hoped that the Modal Split of Green Transportation could rise to 70%. 100% importation of low-emission public transportation vehicles. Enhance accessible environment. Achieve 0 gap. An annual decrease of 3% for traffic accident rate.

Witnessing "Cloud-mounting Express" (Tengyun Express) in Taiwanese railway history
The very first steam locomotive in Taiwan, evoking rail fans' old memories.
Taiwan's first Grand Governor, Mingchuan Liu, imported two steam engines from Germany, and named them "Cloud-mounting First Express" and "Wind-riding Second Express". One of these first steam locomotives, "Cloud-mounting Express" is preserved, and displayed in 228 Peace Memorial Park next to National Taiwan Museum. It brings many people as well as rail fans memories of its valiantly speeding along the railway of bygone days.

Cosmic synchronization in Taipei Town
One street, different spatial memories of three generations…

Wondering through the diverse and mottled history and the constantly changing cityscape, different generations have different spatial memories of the neighborhoods development in Taipei. Different streets in Taipei are of different styles.

Tricycle, fast you go...
In the early era of Taiwanese society when the bus or motor vehicles were underdeveloped, the rickshaw was a very important means of transport. When the central government moved to Taiwan in 1949, there was an influx of Shanghai's rickshaws. Since mechanization "runs faster", it gradually replaced rickshaws and became the most common means of transport seen on streets in Taipei. There were 5,847 rickshaws in Taipei in 1949, 100 times the statistics of 1946. However, with the evolution of time, in 1960 the city government, in an attempt to improve the image of the city, initiated a ban on rickshaws. The scene of rickshaws clustering in front of tall buildings had eventually become the light and shadow of the bygone era in old photos, which bring back memories.

Isuzu Bull's Head Bus
Revisiting the commuting times in the 1950s, seats in retro arranged marriage type …
For people who lived through the 1950s, the commuting days spent on "Isuzu Bull's head Buses" are unforgettable.
This bus model was a diesel bus with a front styling that Taipei City Bus Service Department bought from Japan in 1956. It looked amusingly simple and unsophisticated because of its yellow body and white top, together with the shape of the hood akin to a bull's head. The layout of seats was face to face, then called the "arranged marriage type". In the conservative era, it may have generated many "love-at-first-sights" and made good matches for young men and women.
For the people who have become accustomed to intelligent bus stands, the round iron bus stop signs of early days might seem old-fashioned, but they bring back memories of youth.
With the evolution of bus stands, the round iron bus stop signs that simply marked the terminal stations and stops along the route evolved into acrylic material with the addition of roadmaps. Then came the emergence of intelligent bus stands with Internet data connection and dynamic display for schedule updates. This evolution symbolizes the constant improvement of Taipei's transportation, which has become more friendly and convenient.

Arcade leveling x road leveling project
New look, friendly walking space created…

Take Zhonghua Road as an example. In the era of our grandparents, it was once the three-lane road built after the dismantling of the City Walls. After the construction of north-south railway, people and vehicles staggered about on "iron bars road" around the level crossings. It was overcrowded and there were illegal street vendors everywhere. In the era of our parents, Taiwan's first assembled shopping mall, "Zhonghua Mall", consisting of eight 3-story buildings named Zhongxiao, Heping, Xinyi, and Renai, was seen here. For the new generation of young people, Zhonghua Road has long become an underground railway and has morphed into "Taipei's Champs Elysees". The surrounding area also features Ximen walking area, a haven of fashion for young people.
One street, carrying the memories of growth belonging to different generations in Taipei, shows that Taipei is moving forward continually, creating a space with more pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods.

We have all had the experience before: walking through arcades packed with parked motorcycles is like running an obstacle course, or riding motorcycles on uneven roads.
Since "arcade leveling" and "road leveling project" were implemented in Taipei City, arcades are no longer the parking lot of motorcycles, and have become accessible. The roads can even be used for marathoners to run road races at ease. What a new look!
In order to provide residents and visitors a friendly public pedestrian access, Taipei City Construction Management Office was the first in the country to pilot arcade leveling landscaping since 2002. In 2007, by expanding from primary nodes such as stations, attractions, shopping districts, and hospitals, outward radiation and linear implementation were carried out. It was quite well received.
In 2008, Taipei City began implementing the "road leveling project", which was a radical improvement of road quality in Taipei City. It was hoped that after "scar removing and resurfacing", residents of Taipei would regain a transport environment that has "even roads" and "filled holes".
Up to 2014, Taipei City had completed over 170,000 meters of arcade leveling. After implementing the "Road Leveling Project", about 91% of construction has already been accomplished in May,2014.
